The After the Dentist Smoothie February 16 2016

Going to the dentist, having some dental procedure done that requires anesthesia for pain control, can affect your food intake. It is not only that you won't be able to chew the meal, you could very well bite off your tongue and not even feel it. Well, maybe not that graphic, but you need to be for sure careful to avoid biting your inside cheek.

That said, it is best to drink your meal. What better opportunity than to make yourself a delicious concoction with your high performance blender. In this smoothie we have the best recipe choice for you, which we call the "After the Dentist Smoothie"

Watch the Video

Ingredients are:

  • Spinach (good handful)
  • Pineapple (1 slice 3/4" to 1" thick)
  • Grapefruit (1/2)
  • Grapefruit peel section, to taste / desire
  • Yogurt (Greek Style)
  • Avocado (1/2)
  • Cucumber (2 inches - unpeeled)
  • 1.5 to 2 cups of water
  • Blend for about 30 seconds.

Final yield is about 30 ounces, which are 2 to 3 servings anywhere in the world, except in the USA it is 1 US size serving. Drink with straw to avoid spilling the smoothie on your shirt. Remember, you will obviously not have the greatest feeling in your face / lips / mouth. Use the straw on the side where your mouth is not numb.

The outcome of the smoothie and its texture was extremely smooth and due to the speed and power of the KTec (aka Blendtec) blender, with the sharp-bladed Alterna aftermarket container, the avocado was whipped into a gel type texture. This made the smoothie a little stiffer than usual. It is recommended to add a little more water in case you want to the smoothie little more liquid.

Avocado as a smoothie ingredient, will normally stiffen up the smoothie liquidity into more like a puree or even a pudding, if you let it sit long enough. Avocado carries the properties for that. Chia does too. It is a great way to make avocado green pineapple pudding.

If you enjoyed the video, please share it online. And remember, please, don't poke yourself and avoid biting yourself after you come home from the dentist, trying to eat. Brush your teeth and floss.

Solutions to a Seized Up Blade Assembly Unit on a Blendtec / KTec Blender Container February 05 2016

The Problem

The blade assembly cutting assembly in Blendtec jars (Wildside and Fourside containers) are permanently fix installed in the jar. The ball bearings or bushing can seize up due to water entering the blade assembly housing / bearing housing. The seals sometimes wear out. When the blending assembly is not turning appropriately any more, blending creates smoke and some oil or debris could mix with the smoothie content.

The Solution

Normally, like in Vita Mix type blending containers, blade assembly units can be removed from the jar and replaced. With Blendtec jars the only solution is to throw the jar away and buy a new jar, if your blender warranty is no longer valid. And there is really no reason why one should be upset. There are several things that can be done to prolong the life of the blade assembly unit as can be seen / read here - click here.

See Video about changing out the Container, and what type of container might work the best with the objective to never repeat this expensive problem again.

Please note, even then, with any jar or blade regardless from which brand, that being Vita Mix, Waring, Hamilton Beach, JTC, Optimum, etc (and Blendtec), seals can wear out and blades can seize up. It is important to recognize the problem early so no further damage is caused to the blender motor itself.

How to Repair your Blender Blade

Cancer is a Real and Present Danger January 15 2016

Everybody knows someone who died of cancer. This is not because we necessarily have a cancer-pandemic on hand, but today communication works better, reporting, and determining cause of death is better. Plus the population is by about 2 billion greater than in the 70's and 80's. And people get old enough to get cancer, unless they die at a younger age because of war.

Regardless, in my family a bunch of people died of cancer. My paternal grandfather died of pancreatic cancer, my maternal grandmother died of kidney cancer, I had rectal colon cancer, my father had and survived leukemia, one of my cousins died of testicular cancer at age 23. One of the discovery factors for cancer cause of death is also the fact that people die at an older age today than 20 or 30 years ago. And so, because many people live long enough the get cancer later. And dying later is, or at least should be everyone's prerogative; it is mine for sure.

Whether you are concerned about cancer or not, you should always consult a doctor who can help you watch out for cancer signs. For example skin cancer signs are visible on your skin in a precancerous stage. Precancerous spots and infectious looking mold or fungus can be treated by either freezing it or cutting it out. Doctors will send in the biopsy to a lab to find out whether it may have been malignant or benign. What you want is 'benign', obviously. Or better yet, stay out of the sun. But what fun is that?

Other possible signs for cancer or symptoms related to cancer for example with colon cancer is pain in the abdomen, blood in the stool, and funny looking gooey alike stuff coming out together with the stool. The best rule of thumb to identify whether you should go to the doctor is pain. If the pain, in any case, no matter where it is, you should start investigating it. However keep in mind, in my case, the pain I experienced regarding my colon cancer was in my right foot heal. Using reflexology charts, the point that hurt on my heal was directly pointing to problem in my lower colon and sigmoid colon area and the rectum. Together with blood in the stool and a decade of slight but bearable pain, the signal became clearer and finally I went to the doctor.

Over the years I have investigated possible remedies for cancer, or at least things that might help prevent it and /or better it. Some very important remedy is food, although my oncologist said not to worry about food and just eat normal. Today, normal is fast food and everything out of the can.

The best foods to eat are lactose fermented cabbage (sauerkraut), carrots, garlic, celery, and red beat. What not to eat are white flour breads or pasta, sugar or any sugar substitute, sodas or carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverage, coffee, and excess of red meats. I have become a smoothie enthusiast because the vegetables and fruits are emulsified with a powerful blender to a point that more phyto nutrition is being released into the blood stream, thus giving you more nutrients. But besides blended foods and sauces, juicing is another good and additional method to add healthy nutrients to your body.

Smoothie Video for Cancer

Besides food, one consideration for a cause of cancer was also fungal growth. Whether you believe it or not, fungus is all among us. It is inside of you and on the surface of various parts on your body. Fungus can easier grow in moist and warm areas of your body, areas that are not well vented, such as the feet between the toes, and in the lower pelvis areas, if you know what I mean, as well as under your armpits. Often times people have fungus also growing on their hands, mostly because those are the tools for scratching where it itches. And fungus is known to cause itching.

Science does not yet support the idea of fungus somehow being related to cancer. But there are more and more articles written about it. And if you consider a potential chance for that, and regardless of that, fungus still causing problems by itself even if it is not cancer associated, it is still a good idea anyway to get rid of it. And how is that done?

Essential oils like Rosemary, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Clove, Juniper, and a few others are known to be anti-fungal. Some of these oils may be more functional than others and may result in more burning or cooling than others. Peppermint is especially extremely cooling. Eucalyptus and peppermint are good vapor inhalants to address also nasal and lung related potential illnesses, things that may start with a runny nose or a cough.

Cancer, it's causes and remedies, is always a difficult and challenging topic to discuss. No matter what some people do or try to prevent it, or to heal from it, they are not successful. I have been visiting with many cancer patients during my visits when I received chemo and radiation treatments for my rectal colon cancer. It was a very humbling experience. Every single person I met wanted to live and wanted to try everything possible to survive, yet many of them did not. I do not have the perfect solutions either. For sure, trying to eat better and healthier, living a more active lifestyle, and looking at additional remedy options is not going to hurt.

Hopefully we will find the magic pill, or living waters, or the fountain of youth, that will heal us from death. My objective is immortality. And that I will have with certainty. But death is still a good chance to come my way sooner or later, in which case I definitely prefer "later", the later the better.

Logic behind Sharp versus Dull Knives in Blenders November 25 2015

Blendtec wants to do everything in opposite Vita Mix does. Vita Mix blenders turn counterclockwise, so Blendtec motors turn clockwise. Vita Mix uses, even promotes, the safe use of air pocket eliminating blending accelerator tools (aka plunger or tamper). So Blendtec's Tom Dickson calls them silly (on Youtube), and in opposition promotes a blender and jars (especially the Twister) that do not need apparently a tamper "plunger". Vitamix has sharp blades, so Blendtec professes blades blend better when they are dull.

Really?

Sharp knives really cut better. Have you ever cut yourself on a dull blade edge? Can you cut an apple better with a dull or a sharp knife? Is a Samurai Sword dull or sharp? Is a circular saw blade dull or sharp? Do you know what happens when a circular saw blade is dull and you cut yourself? It pulls in your whole limb and rips it off instead of just a nice clean straight cut. Do you know what happens to wood when you cut with a dull blade? It is ripped to pieces with an ugly looking finish edge and splinters flying.

Get the point?

Sharp is definitely better:

A sharp knife in a blade assembly inside a blender jar cuts ingredients much finer and smoother. Blending goes faster, it is faster better tasting too. No logic question about sharp, just like with the logic behind that a blender apparently never needs a plunger tamper ("Blendtec friends"), while we sell a ton of tampers for Blendtec Wildside and even for the use with the famous Twister jar. Why would consumers buy tampers if they are not needed?

No need to be all about Rebel. By the way the Rebel Jar is a jar made by Blendtec to fit onto thethe Real Rebel Jar by Alterna Jars for Blendtec with replaceable sharp blades Vitamix blender, an idea taken from 123Vita LLC in 2010, really nothing so rebel about when a company like Blendtec actually just rebels against common sense and all logic.

Blendtec makes good Blenders. The fight against everything that Vitamix does is childish. We make the real Rebel Jar, the Alterna Jar with replaceable blade assembly and the knives are really sharp, as sharp as a Samurai Sword.

The same jar fits multiple blenders, like the Vita Mix, Omni blender, or the Waring MX series of blenders, and all Blendtec blenders of course. And we offer a tamper for those who blend puree and nut butters. It's common sense. When you need it you are glad you have it.

How to Sit the Alterna Jar onto your Blender October 06 2015

The Alterna Jar is basically made to fit 2 different type of blenders. One is the Blendtec blender series. The other is the 'other' blender group, which is basically all the same, when it comes to blender jar compatibility.

Alterna jars on Waring Blendtec Vitamix Omni Blenders

They all fit on each others' blender platform, in other words. These are the Waring 3.5 hp blenders (not anything else from Waring), the Vita Mix type blenders, the Omni by JTC, and all their associated private label brands - all the same, basically, when it comes to their jars fitting onto one and the other blender.

The Blendtec blenders' motor turns clockwise and the Blendtec blender base comes with a drive socket attached to the motor axle permanently, metal on metal, no clutch. A clutch would be a way out to absorb energy (bad energy that could break the motor). And the Blendtec blender jars have permanently installed blades that cannot be removed, taken out without breaking the jar and/or the blade bearing assembly, and the blades are not sharp either.

As a matter of fact, Blendtec apparently insists that their blades perform better dull than any other sharpened blades / knives. The only beef with that is however that a dull sword does not cut off heads as easy or as clean as a sword that has a very sharp edge. Also a dull shear machine, if you get your hand in it, instead of cutting off your fingers clean, it will likely pull in your whole hand and arm etc.... you get the point. Bottom line, sharpened is better, no matter who you talk too. That said, and the point is, the blades in the Alterna Jar are sharp, very sharp. For Blendtec applications, the blade in the jar has been sharpened on the right side, ... because the knives are rotating right ways - clockwise.

Alterna Blade for Waring left - for Blendtec right

The drive socket gear is smaller in the Blendtec blenders, so of course the blade assembly in the Alterna jar for the Vita Mix blenders does fit into the Blendtec drive socket. Three things then; The Alterna blade assembly for the use in the Alterna jar on top of the Blendtec blender has a removable blade assembly that is sharpened, turns clockwise, and has the appropriate gear to fit on all Blendtec blenders, except with use in a sound enclosure. For that, there is a new jar on its way in the early 2016.

The blades therefore being different for the use in the Alterna Jar on top of the Waring 3.5 hp blenders and it's alike-kind-type blender bases. The knives are sharpened on the left side of the blade because it turns counter-clockwise. The gear is larger thicker because the drive socket part of that area of the blender motor axle is larger.

Then how do these different Alterna Jar configurations sit on each of these blenders? The Alterna Jar sits on the Blendtec blenders just normal, line its original Wildside or Fourside jar, straight and square. Remember, the Alterna jar was made with the intention that it also fits on the other kind blenders, like Waring, Omni, Vitamix,.... That in mind we engineered the bottom base of the jar in a way that just by turning the jar 45 degrees in an angle it would also fit on the other kind blender bases, thus missing the rubber cushion stubs.

People or restaurants that have both type of blenders, have the opportunity to switch the blade assembly out accordingly and use the Alterna Jar on both blenders. It is not so much that one should switch back and forth between the two uses. Mostly it is advantageous for restaurants that have Blendtec blenders in their shop and want to switch their blender equipment to Waring or Vitamix, for example. They don't have to buy all new jars. A Blade assembly is so much more inexpensive.

Comparisons of Blender Jars with a Fixed Installed Blade to one with a Removable Blade Assembly August 12 2015

Blenders for the delicious smoothie concoction production are employed in restaurants, smoothie shops, or at home among many people in the world. These blenders come with different features, different sizes of containers, their blades / motors turning in either direction, sharp or dull blades / knives and various different designs of blade knife shapes. The issue discussed here is however the pros and cons of blenders and their jars with a removable or a fixed installed blade assembly.

A removable blade assembly is a blade cutting unit containing the knives connected to a shaft that connects to the blender gear. In between is a bearing that keeps the assembly turning smoothly without interruption. These bearings are a conglomerate of steel, usually carbide steel balls sealed up like also seen and used in roller blades. This sealed bearing unit is inside a housing along the shaft that is sealed from both ends in and outside of the jar to prevent water from leaking through either direction.

The blade assembly is inserted into the jar from the inside, sitting it into a hole on the bottom of the blender container. The blade assembly has a threaded area on the bottom. As inserted, from the outside a so-called nut or blade bottom plate, also known as a blade retaining nut (depending on who is the manufacturer), is then screwed onto the thread. This tightens and seals the blade assembly inside the jar to the container bottom and on the outside bottom. In between the bottom plate and the jar is a O-Ring gasket inserted that prevents water from entering.

Various styles of blades knives exist. Most companies use a 4 part or even a 6 part knife assembly where 4 to 6 knives protrude from the center shaft on top of the blender cutting assembly into different directions. Some of these ends point upwards 45 degrees, some are about horizontal, and others point down.

The blending results vary depending on the blade design together in connection with the layout and design of the blender container subject to specific interaction. The best type of blades are sharpened knives, sharp is better than dull.

These type of blades are usually made for jars that sit on blender motors which turn counter-clockwise. This is really for no scientific particular reason. At least some few smoothie and raw food gurus might claim there could be a cosmic harmony at play if the blender motor and the knife cutting assembly turn with the earth rotation, which is counter-clockwise. This may however at the minimum be really far-fetched from a credible reality.

Blender brands such as Vita-Mix, Waring, Hamilton Beach, JTC Omniblend, Omega, Kitchenaid, along that line, a few among many other blenders, have motors that turn counter-clockwise. In general, and usually, the more expensive upper-blender class has jars with very sturdy durable blade units that are screwed on from the outside of the blender container. The cheaper low-end blenders like Kitchenaid, Oster, Cusineart, and low end Hamilton Beach have much thinner units and also have to come off every time a jar needs washing.

Washing a jar with the blade installed or taken out should always be an option. Taking the blade out may also have the associated benefit to replace if the bearing might be worn out or simply has seized up due to age and wear and tear. It is just more sanitary if a user has the option and discretion to remove the whole blade assembly unit for cleaning, or for replacement if broken, or for sharpening or re-sharpening… any kind of maintenance.

Usually those companies that offer blender jars with removable or replaceable blade assembly cutting units, also offer a jar without blades by itself and the blade assembly by itself.

The bearings of these type of blades are prong usually to seize when over-exposed to water either through washing them in the dishwasher or soaking the jar and the blades inside the sink. It is possible that water could get into the bearing housing, although not likely or it won’t happen easily. It will happen over time due to wear and tear, and then the blade needs to be replaced, one of the advantages a removable blade – type blender container has over a container with a fixed installed blade, because that too tends to seize up.

As far as it is known, only Blendtec® offers a blender jar type with a fixed permanently installed blade. Instead of however equipped with ball bearings, these assemblies consist of bushings. A bushing is as opposed to balls (bearings) depending on a specific design, a buffer, a cushion type of two ends that are greased up and rub against each other in a manner that little friction arises, as little as possible.

In the cases of the Blendtec Jars, either Wildside®, the Fourside®, or the Twister® Jar, Blendtec uses such a bushing instead of ball bearings. This allows for a much smaller housing around the shaft that must stay lubricated to easily turn and follow the torque forced onto the dual wing-tipped blade assembly. By the way, Blendtec blades are not sharp.

The advantage of a bushing is that is uses up less space than the ball bearings in a housing and therefore can be installed closer to the motor gear, of course in respect to other blenders, that being really minimal. The disadvantage is that bushings are usually not as strong and durable as ball bearings.

Water still can get into the though hermetically sealed off blade shaft bushing housing, especially and controversially associated to the lack of usage. Water and usage usually keeps and helps to keep the bushing seal area lubricated and seal. If it dries out too long especially after usage it can often happen that the seal separates and the bushing seizes up and you can’t no longer use the container .

These types of bushing-operated blender blades are not replaceable. Sure they are removable and replaceable if one had the tools to remove them and put them back in once cleaned up and repaired. Consumers, especially however restaurant shop and smoothie shop operators tend to move away from fixed blade blender jars because of the cost factor. They have to replace the whole jar, which is still good and usable, however just because removable blade features are not available.

Other advantages of have a blender jar with the option to remove and replace blades is not just for the purpose of repair and maintenance, but also for opening the door to use and facilitate different styles of blades. Of course a controversy exists that one blade may do it all. But it has been proven, although in general it is true that even a dry blade can blend up wet ingredients, a wet blade also blends very effectively dry grain wheat ingredients and coffee, and ice too can be blended with any of the various blade and knife design setups, that differences and high efficiency outcomes vary subject to blade design. A smoothie shop that makes one kind of an ice type smoothie may over time help to save energy and even prolong the life of the jar and the blades all together as opposed to using a more generic blade assembly unit.

As introduced up on top, blending is done with much variable consideration to the design of the jar, the blades, and the sharpness, as well as the power of the motor, and believe it or not, also of how the ingredients are placed inside a jar, in which order, if hard solid frozen or fresh soft is on top or bottom. Even the use of a tamper adds to the variable of blending effectiveness.

Tampers are mostly only used when the consistency of the ingredients is more solid than liquid – it’s a liquid to solids ratio issue in most cases. As long as the blender unit can turn and create a vortex, the action in which the blades propel all ingredients in a turning action and creating a liquefying emulsifying texture of the ingredients, no tamper is needed. Getting stuck, especially when making intentionally solids purees or paste, even nut butters, some kind of a stir stick, aka plunger (ouch – not toilet related) can just give the push to get that vortex going or to stir the puree into a fine creamy concoction.

Sharper blades can cut better. That is definitely demystified. No way that dull knifes are better than sharp knives. The consumer and commercial smoothie market will soon see the Blendtec blender industry with sharpened knives. As a matter of fact, a company called Alterna jars already has come out with sharpened knives, they are also removable and replaceable, of course. The Alterna jar is made to fit on the Blendtec blenders, as well as with a simple blade assembly switch, will fit also on those blenders that turn counter-clockwise.

Considering the Importance of a Blender Tamper August 05 2015

blender tamper universally adjustableBlenders from Vita-Mix come along with a tamper accelerator tool, whereas Blendtec and Waring do not offer it. Officially advertised, the blending cycles of Blendtec blenders exclude the need for a tamper accelerator tool, and Waring chooses not to avail one to customers. Certain consumers however find it necessary having a tamper present sometimes. Others prepare their smoothie, purees, nut butters, creams, and soups with intent of using a stirring tamper tool.

While Blendtec is stating as a marketing type method that no tamper is needed, in various cases it is more than handy to have one available because if you do get stuck with your food then it is safer to have one than for example using a fork or spatula to give the ingredients a quick push-down to get the blending motion going.

Different names are assigned to a tamper, relative to its manufacturer, whether from Blendtec, Waring or Vitamix in this case. A majority of individuals refer to it simply as a tamper. This important tool is used for pushing down ingredients to the upper proximity of the blade level, but with some safe distance, to achieve accelerated blending process of content such as raw soup, puree, nut butters, or smoothie. Utilizing an accelerator tool moves ingredients forcefully towards this blade, which rotates at extremely high speeds.

Vita-Mix Accelerator Tool is made from a polycarbonate type plastic comprising a lid hand which closes off the hole formed inside blender container lid while in use. The tool moves freely in and out of the container. Downward action of content creates vacuum action which sucks it into the container as blending takes place. Vita Mix recommends that one use their Accelerator tool throughout the process of blending to expedite the action. Their so-called patented accelerator tools to vacate air pockets are almost needed all the time as per Vita-Mix advertising. But air pockets according to a lawsuit between Vita-Mix and Basic and its follow up appeal confirmed that Vita-Mix however was unable to successfully proof air pockets. One could simply add more water to the ingredients and create the vortex action. But you don’t always want a more liquid concoction.

Certain retro-fitted tamper tools are available in the market. Some blender operators also prefer using a plastic tool or wooden dowel for pushing down towards the blade in rotation to accelerate blending operation. As a result the tamper gets blended up and/or damaged. This could be due to use of an appropriate Accelerator tool with lid in place. If one were not to use a tamper tool appropriately with lid in place, say, for example a fork or knife, or even a hand, pushing down on ingredients that way in high performance blenders could lead to very serious injuries, amputation, and/or damage to the blender units and blades.

Blending Soups and Purees with or without Tamper

When preparing ingredients for smoothies or soups, water is normally added. A tamper may not be necessary to use while blending the content, if sufficient liquid or water is added to the other raw ingredients. A hollow cave area appears just above the blade only when excessive amount of ice is applied for the smoothie process, with the blender cycle turning too fast. Blendtec blenders like the HP3A or Total Blenders are designed with the versatile blending programs it operates, which eliminate the necessity of using a tamper, supposedly. It is “supposedly” because this claim is not always true. There are just too many variables in blending that could be the amount of ingredients, how they are placed, which one first, what consistency they are, what the liquid to solids ratio is, if there are some obstructions like large ice section, and the timing of the blender, the blender motor strength and momentum of turning and starting up, etc. Still, one may require some type of tool to push down the blending ingredients, maybe for stirring, maybe just enough of a push to get the blending action going. Once it is running, meaning you see all the ingredients cycling, the blades will do all the rest of the blending by themselves.

Less amount of liquid is used when preparing a pate or puree in a high-performance blender. One may as well require some form of device for pushing down contents to the blade level. Blendtec especially makes its blenders to operate without needing an accelerator tool or tamper. However, consumers report using cutlery and other equipment to push down the ingredients.

Especially when making nut butters (i.e. Almond butter), a tamper tool is mandatory. The nuts are too heavy and oily, so they are sticky, they just will not freely circulate with the blade turning action. You need to help it to move along and turn over the massive almond puree until it gets oily and is ready for consumption.

The Universal Tamper Accelerator Tool made by Alterna is a great device which fits into any blender jar. Some exceptions exist, like for the Ninja, which lacks the blade construction appropriate for allowing tamper-insertion. The Ninja’s blade is really like an auger that does not let the user insert the tamper. The universality of the Alterna tamper means that it literally can be adjusted and set at different height levels from the area where the tamper is inserted into the jar through the hole in the lid. This adjustability is important to make sure that the tamper will never touch the turning blade during operation when inserted into the jar. Different blender styles and brands have different dimensions from the hole in the lid down to the tip of the blade.

Acetal Delrin, the material employed in making this tamper is approved by FDA “for food contact.” As a precautionary measure, the 2 pieces of flanges (rings) are clamped around the location desired, fitting the tamper in firm manner, the location being the adjustment area that determines the remaining length of the tamper end that is being inserted into the lid cap hole, reaching down towards the blades. This keeps the low tamper-end from touching the blades once inserted through the lid.

The Alterna tamper can fit into Vita-Mix 64 ounce containers, the 32 oz jar, Blendtec Wildside or Fourside, all the Waring and Hamilton Beach blenders, and Kitchenaid, Cusineart, Oster blenders. You name it, if the blender has a jar with a removable lid cap and a regular type blending blade cutting unit, the Universal Tamper come universally adjustable in as a very handy tool. It is apparently better to have it and not need the tamper, than needing it and then using a fork or worse, your hand.

Wood tamper dowels too are becoming quite popular to be used as tampers. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to make when one has a drill machine. Just cut the dowel to length between 8 to 12 inches, usually a dowel with a diameter of 1 inch. Drill in a hole of 3/8” where the appropriate location of the stoppage cross rod should go through to prevent the dowel from entering the jar through the opening in the lid. This cross dowel will prevent the dowel ‘hopefully’ from touching the blades during the blending action. Otherwise, if the wood dowel touches the blades, it will splinter severally making the dowel unusable for future blending actions. Wood also has the likely tendency to absorb water and is therefore very insanitary.

Some people like wood better over plastic, because if by accident one were to blend in untreated wood into ones smoothie, the smoothie would at least still be somewhat edible, subject to one’s appetite. Of course if plastic is blended into a smoothie, you would have to through it all away, for sure. The Acetal Delrin material does not splinter much and therefore unlike with the wood and the completely shattering hollow plastic tamper, Acetal Delrin (POM) is a solid compressed high density material that will be rendered reusable as a tamper stick. From that aspect, and because POM has been used for food processing in food contact for decades, it is an ideal material for the food blending applications as a tamper accelerator tool.

Alterna Jar and Blades and Universal Tampers

Replacement Jars for Blendtec Waring and JTC Blenders June 23 2015

The Alterna Jars are engineered and developed in the USA with the intention to retrofit one and the same container perfectlyalterna jar on omni blender on multiple high performance smoothie blending machines. These are all Blendtec blenders, Vitamix(TM), JTC Omniblend, Waring(TM) MX1050XT blenders, and a few others. Blendtec blenders have a different jar base design and normally a Blendtec(R) jar will not fit onto the Vitamix or Omni Blender or Waring blenders (MX Raptor type). And the Vitamix blender jars, Waring, Omni JTC fit all on the other blender base, but they do not fit on the Blendtec blender base, normally.

And so we have designed a container that fits on both of these general blender platforms. The only difference is, you will sit the Alterna jar onto the Blendtec blenders straight, and on Waring, Good4U, etc... blenders in an angel perpendicular 45 degrees turned. The patent-pending design with specifically engineered jar cutouts allow space for the Alterna jar to sit on the Waring rubber blender cushion (and JTC and Vitamix...). The Waring et al blenders turn counter-clockwise and Blendtec turns clockwise, however. And so the blades need to be sharpened on opposite sides and the user who wants to use the Alterna Jar on a Blendtec blender must have the correct Alterna Blade for Blendtec blenders installed while the user who wants to use the Alterna Jar on a Vitamix or Waring or JTC blender, must use the jar with the correct Alterna blade blending assembly for the Waring and JTC et al blenders. The gears are modified in size and dimensions accordingly to fit correctly into the applicable blender.

Note, minimum size of blending capability is 16 ounces and maximum effectiveness is at around 55 ounces to 64 ounces, depending on liquid content ratio to solids. The Alterna Jar is capable of various blends and concoctions such as smoothies, hot soups, ice cream, sorbet, sauces, purees, paste, rice, grain to flour, broccoli, cabbage, avocado pits, ice cubes...

The other patent-pending engineering of this high performance jar set up for perfect Blendtec blender and Waring (et al) blender application is the requirement to elongate the gear - shaft to make room below the jar (jar and gear patent pending) for the bottom plate screw / nut so you can tighten down the changeable replaceable blade unit cutting blending assembly on the Alterna Jar specifically for Blendtec blender applications. Blendtec does not have jars with replaceable blades, but Vitamix and OMNI and Waring however do.

We have noticed on many occasions that customers / blender users would have bought a Blendtec blender but instead bought a Vitamix or JTC Omni blender or Waring MX1050XT blender because Blendtec has a fixed installed blade. The issue is, the blade will wear out (the bearing / bushing, to be exact) and then the blender operator has to purchase a brand new Blendtec jar. Bearing-operated blade assembly cutting units hold up longer than bushing driven blades, because they have better seals and gaskets and harder bearings (bearings are better than bushings). The bearings balls are made from a carbide alloy, the same used for roller skates and blades. And this is a big money savings issue especially for restaurant smoothie shop operators.

No matter if you have a Vitamix, Waring MX XT blender, JTC Omni or Blendtec blender, you can use the same Alterna Jar, however by selecting the correct blade cutting blending assembly unit. Select between the Alterna Blade - Blendtec or Alterna Blade Waring, Waring also fitting on Vitamix, Good4U Raw Power, and JTC Omni Blenders, perhaps others, such as Omega and Centaur blenders.

Disclaimer: We are no longer selling smoothie blenders. The mere fact that our Alterna Jar and it's blades are interchangeable and also fit on various other diverse high power blender brands is not prohibited by law, but not likely supported by it's brand owners. Brand owners may probably do and/or threaten to void warranty, however Alterna will gladly issue warranty coverage over said claimed equipment if it can legitimately be proven that a problem may have been caused by the Altern jar and/or its blade mechanism and its usage, provided it has been used correctly in accordance to our jar and blade maintenance guideline. If a blade has seized up and being used regardless, it can cause potentially to drive socket and/or cause motor damage. The trademarks of Waring, Vitamix, Blendtec, etc... are owned by their applicable owners. The Alterna Jar and Blades are patent pending and trademark registered.

Blendtec Blenders fix Blades - Alterna Jar with removable blade June 16 2015

The Orem Utah Blendtec company makes great blenders. They are very powerful blenders and blend efficiently. Blendtec blenders themselves will outlast their jars and blades by many years. Blendtec blenders are commonly known for its high quality textured blending. Tom Dickson, the CEO of the company, is well-known to blend up ipods, phones and rocks or diamonds with his successful "Will-it-Blend" blending presentations posted on Youtube. Blendtec's latest jar success is the twister jar; before it was the wildside container and the regular fourside jar.

The wildside jar used to be known as the 5-side jar or 3 quart jar. It surely has 5 patented sides, but it was never really or truly a 3 quart 96 ounces container. The blades, there are 2 knives, one on each side of the axle, are dull and turn counter-clockwise. If the blade bushing, note - it does not have bearings- wears out and seizes up, users have to replace the entire complete jar. This is because the blade assembly unit is fix installed and cannot be removed or exchanged like with the famous Vita-Mix design. Vita-Mix and Blendtec are arch rivals when it comes to tamper usage and application and removable exchangeable blades versus fix-installed blades. Vita-Mix also turns the blade counter-clockwise and their blades are sharped.

A Blendtec fourside jar runs about 70 to 80$ dollars, a Blendtec wildeside jar runs about $95 to $110 dollars. Vitamix blade assemblies cost about $ 65 to $70 dollars while their jar complete with blade is exorbitantly 150$ dollars expensive. These are USA prices. In other markets such as Australia or Brazil, Blendtec Jars are at least twice as expensive as here in the USA and Vitamix jars cost at least 50% plus over the US.

If you have a Blendtec blender as a consumer with a US 7 year warranty (Europe for example provides a 3 year Total Blender Blendtec warranty), while still on warranty, if you happen to experience a blade bearing / bushing seizing up, Blendtec is usually very accommodating (Not in Europe, Brazil or Australia though). Just give them a call, if you can, and they will send you a new container if your initial  blender purchase is still under warranty, of course. If your warranty has expired, you are looking at having to purchase a new jar. With Vitamix you just buy a new blade and swap that out. This is one of the reasons why many consumers and shop operators buy the Vita-Mix type (also the Warring or Omni) blenders in the first place.

Restaurant or commercial use warranty of Blendtec Blenders is in the US 1 year. Restaurants use the jars more than ten thousand times per year. Therefore the blade bushing wears out faster in a restaurant / commercial application over a household consumer usage. Go to for example your local restaurant equipment supply store where restaurant and smoothie shop operators usually buy their equipment and restaurant supply from and ask them what the biggest draw-back for Blendtec blenders is. They will tell you that many of their commercial customers go through a lot of Blendtec jars every year because you cannot switch out the blade assembly. This is very expensive for these business people because they have to buy all whole new complete jars every time.

Now, this is the question that we propose -and we have already the solution for it as well:  What if consumers and commercial operators could purchase a Blendtec blender container that has a better and removable / replaceable or exchangeable blade unit cutting assembly? What if there was an alternative jar and blade solution to the Blendtec blender smoothie application? What if the blade bearing were to wear out for example, and instead of having to buy a whole new jar, you could just replace the blade assembly for your Blendtec blender, just like you could do with your Vitamix?

To take it a step further, Alterna Blender Jars and Blades makes one and the same blender container to fit on Blendtec blenders, also to fit on Waring MX1050XT (and alike 3.5 hp extreme blenders), on the JTC Omni Blender, and Vita-Mix alike type blenders (also the Good4U)... just swap out the blade for the different direction and different size of gear.

Blendtec jars and blenders do not come with tampers. Vitamix blenders however do. Alterna makes a universal tamper specifically for the Alterna jar for your Blendtec blender application.

Refurbished Blenders - Why Would You Want One? September 12 2014

From a consumer standpoint, a refurbished high performance blender, such as the Blendtec blender series, and other competitors in the $500 price club, appears at first to be a nice deal. There are however several points of views to look at as to why companies could have refurbished blenders in stock, why they are offering them, and who would return them - in what quantity - and why?

To the most part, these factories over-sell and under-deliver unfortunately to the dissatisfaction of the many customers who return their expensive blenders to the factory directly or through the retailer. The factory then goes over the blender and cleans it up and puts a new unused jar with a new recipe book into a new box and then offers the blender for sale as refurbished. This is one most plausible theory.

Why would a customer not be happy or satisfied with an expensive high performance blending machine? This is one possibility that has been found at Costco and at Sams Club. The consumer sees and tastes a fine magical smoothie during a demo show. The blender demonstrator, well experienced and highly trained, shows off fancy tricks and concoctions that leave the consumer at a jaw-dropping awe. Once at home with the new shiny toy, duplicating the smoothie is some other foreign story and the remorse sets in. And the cycle of return begins.

What is wrong with that picture? Yep. We like to educate our customers about gimmick purchases. No, a blender does not heat soup with an electric heating element (it heats soup with the blade unit that turns into a heating element because of friction). No you don't need a dedicated button to crush ice, make peanut butter or almond butter. A yes, you are paying at $ 400 to $500 already way too much for a 3 horsepower high performance blender when you can get the same thing in brand new for half the price. Look at the OMNI Blender for example. Half the price?

Still be aware of the many crappy not so well built and under-performing blending machines. Some totally copy the Vitamix, Blendtec blenders, and the OMNI blender straight out. Ninja, Nutri Bullet, the Health Master, all are inferior to the big and powerful blenders, the name of the game. We have sold many different blenders and have gone away from it and now are just focusing on the OMNI Blender. The JTC OMNIBLEND blender is the best blender bang for the buck because of its quality, power, warranty, and low competitive price.

We have been in business selling blenders since 2007. Ever since, having carried many different high quality high powered blending machines, we have wondered why we can't sell refurbished blenders? The simple answer is: Hardly ever anyone returns the blender. Why do you think that is? We leave it by that because that fact and question is already a good enough answer in itself. And why do you want a refurbished blender when you can get a brand new OMNI Blender for the same price as other used ones? Do you want the chance to have someone else' hair in your smoothie?

If we had refurbished blenders available, they would cost $225 including shipping and would be cleaned up, coming with a new jar and blade, tamper, and new recipe book, all in a new box and full 7 year standard warranty; that is if enough customers would return theirs. But they don't. Customers have the opportunity to purchase the OMNI 3 hp smoothie blender and review it for 30 days and take advantage of our return policy should they wish to return it within that time frame.

I order to reduce the likelihood of a consumer to return a blender we focus on education of our blender, what it does, how it performs, and how to make smoothies, in the front-end before they are buying their high powered blender. A refurbished blender could theoretically also be returned, it just has never happened.
